HCR2009 Feedback

2009/10/26
AOYAMA @ HiRoad

Here I note some feedbacks about HCR2009.

Missing 40 mile resting place:

Until 2008, the Waimanalo recreation center had been a perfect place to take a first break for 100 milers. It places just right distance from the starting-point and spacey green and shading trees provided a perfect break. We took a rest and started again to challenge the Waimanalo hilly area. In 2003, it wasn’t a turn-around point but merely a resting point and it was OK.

I hope we could have the Waimanalo recreation center again as the resting place.

Missing mile stickers:

I know we had to cut the budget due to the withdrawal of JAL support this year. However, most riders missed the mile stickers. They used to felt the sense of accomplishment when volunteer people gave the sticker on the riders’ back.

Also the riders felt a kind of uncertainty this year. That is, when a rider claims he did 100 mile, the volunteer guy has no clue to check his saying and all he will do is just give the rider a 100 mile certification. There is a room for cheating. Of course the cheating here means no good, though for those who honestly accomplished his or her big mile feel that their honest challenge is spoiled by this room for the cheating.

I think stickers might cost too much but the stamps might not. If we could have some extra volunteers for the stamping, we could stamp the miles on the riders’ back at each turn-around points.
When it comes to the sense of accomplishment, the volunteer guys at the finish managed to call-up almost all the name of the finishers respectively. It was amazing (without the electronic chip-sensor system) and most finishers thanked to their effort very much.

Foods:

I don’t miss the rice crackers we had in 2008 and 2007. They are too dry and hard to swallow for the thirsty riders’ mouth.

I understand the HCR is not a race but a touring event and people are expected to ride with their own risk and preparations, however, I hope we could have some more carbo-hydrates (bread or rice, pasta maybe) at each aid-stations.
(I still sometimes miss the delicious cupcakes (some with choco-chips!) we had in 2006 or around.)

Brief starting ceremony:

These several years, the starting ceremony gets longer and longer. I know it is important to give the sponsors the chances to be exposed to the participants, but a rider told me; “Now that I am trying my best to reach to 100 mile here and every minute counts to overcome the time limit”.

I think we might be able to start the ceremony a bit earlier so that we can start riding early as well. Or, coudn’t we simply cut off the time for the sponcers?

In 2009, so many Japanese riders had to give up joining to HCR. It was because Japanese national big holidays (the Silver Week) were one week before the HCR week, and they couldn’t take another holidays right after the Silver Week.

This critical sequence of Japanese holidays will come again in 2015. In 2015, the Silver Week is from 19th to 23rd of Sept. and regular scheduled HCR day is right after the week. The same will be in 2026, 2032, 2037, 2043, and 2049, so far.

I can surely say, if we could slide the HCR one week prior to the standard schedule in these critical years and have the ride at the Silver week in Japan, so much more Japanese riders will be able join to HCR.

New Bike lane in Kailua:

I noticed at mirror-smooth, pitch-black pavement in Kailua on HCR course, and I saw wide and clean bike lane to go. It was fantastic. Thank you for your all efforts to promote cycling in Hawai’i.

Sudden steps on the 75 to 100 mile course side:

(As Aya may already reported to you,) Some Japanese riders reported the danger they experienced on course. They rode on the roadside (outside of car-lane, outside of white-line), and suddenly there comes steps or steep slopes to barrier the riders. They said some fell down and some ware very scared.

I think, Basically the HCR is a touring event and people are expected to ride with their own risk and preparations, however, some sinages might help and also we could inform about those obstacles in the Safety Briefings and maybe in the blog as well ( if, or when a Japanese HBL blog starts).
